PCIe uses 12V and 3.3V, not 5V. Regardless of which type of power connector the riser has, it must generate the 3.3V power needs of the PCIe card connector using a voltage regulator or DC-DC converter. All the riser's I've see use a voltage regulator. They work by dissipating the difference in the voltage input and output as heat. The voltage input to the regulator can come from a 12V supply leg or a 5V supply leg of the PSU. Since PCIe cards are allowed to consume up to 3A from the 3.3V line, the difference in power consumption between regulating down from 12V or 5V could be as high as ((12V-5V) @ 3A) = 21 WATTS per GPU!
A riser that has a 6- or 8- pin PCIe power connector on the riser must derive the 3.3V the GPU needs 12 the 12V leg since the 6-pin or 8-pin molex connector does get the 5V (red) wires. In theory that: generates heat; wastes power; and takes more power from the 12V leg of the PSU than the GPU would if the GPU were simply attached to the motherboard.
However, a riser with either a SATA connector (actually on the riser, not using an adapter), or a 4-pin AMP connector (like old IDE Hard drives, [also incorrectly called 4-pin molex]) is providing both 12V and 5V to the riser. So in theory a riser that uses the 5V supplied to it by either of these connectors to derive the 3.3V power needs of the GPU will: dissipate less heat, waste less energy (up to 21 watts less), and take less power from the 12V leg of the PSU.
Changing to 4-pin or SATA risers could also reduce total power consumption of a rig for those pushing the limits of their PSU's 12V leg beyond the most efficient range (between 50% - 85% of capacity) by reducing the demand on the 12V leg.
But here's the question. Has anyone actually tested this to confirm that the 4-pin AMP or SATA power connector risers actually use the 5V supply to generate 3.3V? Or does anyone actually have schematics for the various riser versions 005, 006, 007, etc. to verify whether this is true?
